AARON DOUGLAS: “In a dark show this is one of the darkest episodes. It is hard to watch. It was hard to film. The subject matter is horrifying and disturbing. For these reasons I have chosen to include just a short piece, a feeling of one of the horrifying scenes, in the hopes of helping people understand the context but also to honour Grace’s powerful performance. Along with this snippet I’ve included the end scene where Helo and Chief are being taken away after being arrested for, what in my mind, is being good human beings.

I believe that Grace and Tricia should’ve won every award available to them, and more. The performance of these two ladies is incredible, indelible and profound. I am so fortunate to have shared the screen with such amazing actors. Thank you ladies for what I know touched the lives of many viewers.

In the scene where Chief and Helo run down the hall to intervene in what is happening in that cell…. I can’t even describe it. At the beginning of each take Tahmoh and I hear the screams of Grace and he’s like an angry bear on a chain and only “action” releases the chain. I ran in front because I knew he’d leave me in the dust. Tahmoh is an amazing father, son, brother, friend and his instinct to protect Grace took over every acting instinct he had. It was one of those occasions where “acting” isn’t really that difficult. The difficulty lies in remembering you’re in a make believe moment. He is an amazing man, a great actor and a wonderful friend and I was so lucky to get to share that scene and moments with him. Thank you Tahmoh.

And thank you Michael Rymer for helping us navigate the incredible writing of Anne Cofell Saunders. As with every moment I’ve had on screen that Michael has directed I was so blessed to have his mentorship to aid me in understanding the material far beyond my own personal experiences in life. Michael has this incredible ability to get you to places of emotional availability that you didn’t realize you had nor did you see him leading you there. He’s a phenomenal director and a wonderful person.

Speaking of wonderful people…. This week has been a tough one for the BSG family. As many of you know Michael Hogan is in a serious battle after sustaining a life changing injury. The pledges of love, support, money and all else have been overwhelming for our BSG family. You are all a great part of our lives and extended BSG family. Thank you. From the bottom of my frakking heart… thank you!”

The visual of the Chief with Boomer and the Viper is really beautiful and interesting to me. I think that interplay really gives insight into him, how he sees the things he cares about and how he can be rough and tough but gentle when it’s needed. #BSG15Years

This was so much fun to film b/c @TahmohPenikett is one of the toughest & best fighters I know & this is the only time I’d have a chance at beating him. We got to throw each other around for a day and it’s always fun when you can really get after it with another actor #BSG15Years

I got to go to the construction building and watch them build the Blackbird in stages for filming. We shot this whole episode in sequence, rarely done, and every day the construction people would wheel in the next build of the ship. It was very cool. #BSG15Years

Working with Michael Hogan is always a treat but this scene really stands out for me. The almost completely broken Chief just looking for anything to give him life and the humanity of Tigh coming through as he recognizes that. Hogan is an absolute gem. #BSG15Years

I know Starbuck says “don’t blow up on me, you bastard” but when I watch this scene I say “please don’t blow up on HER, they’ll blame the Chief!” HA. Katee really sells bucking bronco at a rodeo and it’s really fun to watch. #BSG15Years

MARY! If this scene doesn’t make you cry you may be a robot. @bearmccreary’s music just rips at your soul and the awkwardness between the Chief and Roslin is so very sweet. When @MaryMcDonnell10 lifted that bottle to smash it Chief almost flew out of his boots. #BSG15Years

This episode was written by David Eick & Ronald D. Moore and directed by Jeff Woolnough. #BSG15Years.

Chief is having ALL the emotions in this scene with Athena and it’s heartbreaking. Their exchange is a scene that has stuck with me all these years. But OMG I really want to smack Helo. He stole the Chief’s girlfriend, got her pregnant and then has the nerve to act all pissy. Yeah, it was a different model but Helo didn’t know that at the time. So Helo can frak off. Frak all the way off. I absolutely adore Tahmoh but oh my gods, I can’t stand Helo. I’m glad the Chief got to punch him in ‘Flight Of The Phoenix’ 🤣

Oh to watch this scene now, knowing what we know … Ha “I am NOT a Cylon!” I wish I had an outtake where I looked at the camera and said “and neither are you Colonel…” 🤣 #BSG15Years

Aaron Douglas (@theaarondouglas) August 5, 2020
A few hours into shooting I said “hey! I should have a sling. I was shot in the previous episode”. The director and 1st AD agreed. So we had to go back and reshoot everything. Then I tried for a nap but got rag dolled by Grace and stabbed in the neck by @jamescallis. #BSG15Years

This scene is a sentimental favourite of mine because it’s the first scene I’d ever watched of BSG.

When I met Aaron I had no idea who he was, I had no idea what BSG was (scroll a few posts back for that story). The following week after meeting him I was on vacation in NYC. While I was getting ready to go out to dinner with a friend I thought “let me check out that tv show that guy is on”. I turned on the tv and started flipping through the channels looking for BSG.

It was a new episode. People are shouting insults at a woman in handcuffs being led down a hallway. There he (Aaron) is, walking behind her. So yay, I’ve found the show. And then a 12 year old steps out and shoots the woman in handcuffs. And as she’s dying in his arms she says “I love you, Chief”. I messaged Aaron and asked him if his character loved her too. He told me I’d have to watch the show and find out for myself. So when I got back home to Australia I started at the miniseries and was instantly hooked.

I think this might explain why I’m such a die hard fan of Chief and Boomer because finding out if he loved her was my reason for watching BSG. Chief & Boomer ❤️

Filming was so fun. Dir. Sergio worked on Saving Private Ryan and wanted to give Chief that hero moment. I hit the target, left handed, on take 1. Very proud of myself, Ha. After it aired Mary told me she jumped and clapped at the end of the scene. “Yes! Chief!” #BSG15Years

Dude I can’t believe how fast time is flying.

Aaron Douglas (@theaarondouglas) July 30, 2020
Right? Every time I see one of these clips for #BSG15Years I think, “You know, my thinner younger brother is a pretty good actor.” Ha! It feels like a lifetime ago.

BONUS #BSG15Years video clips from FRAGGED

Aaron chooses the video clips for these #BSG15Years posts. And I would have picked the same one he did because I *LOVE* that Chief ‘hero moment’ scene. But because ‘Fragged’ is one of my favourite Chief episodes I’m including some other clips from the episode.

(1) In the #BattlestarGalacticast for Fragged @trutriciahelfer wondered if the last line in this scene was an ad-lib by Aaron. I’m 99.9% sure it was because I asked him the same thing years ago. But let’s have @theaarondouglas confirm/deny it. @jamescallis #BSG15Years

Aaron Douglas (@theaarondouglas) July 29, 2020
I CAN confirm it is a great line and I CAN confirm I’m 99.9% sure it’s an ad-lib. Leaving just a little wiggle room in case I’m wrong. 😉 @trutriciahelfer @jamescallis #BSG15Years

James Callis (@james_callis) July 30, 2020
The weight’s off my shoulders now! I mean the load! X

(2) I *LOVE* this scene. The Chief’s facial expressions just screams “Crashdown is an incompetent dumbass”. I wish they had left in the (as Ron Moore called it) ‘f-ck you salute’ part of the scene. “You’re out in the middle of everything, and the bad guys are watching. Whoever gets saluted is the highest-ranking guy. You don’t want to be saluted when they are trying to pick out who’s the guy they need to take down”.

(3) Another great scene. “Look, no disrespect, but like why are we always going uphill?” (lol). And I love that even though the Chief thinks that Crashdown is ‘insane in the membrane’ he is respecting his decision as the commanding officer.

(1) Flash/Thunder was an adlib by me as a nod to WWII, one that I’m particularly proud of. (2) This scene was really difficult to film. Rymer was instrumental in getting me through it. Chief lost one of his closest guys and I lost my friend Alonzo from the show. #BSG15Years

My part of this scene was filmed outside Baltar’s house in the driveway. The crew set up the inside of the Raider in a blackout tent. It was about 45C inside that thing. I wrapped and hair&makeup had left for the day so I had to drive home, 45 mins, covered in goo 🤣 #BSG15Years

I still can’t believe Chief poured it out. It must’ve been pure garbage. But we all know Col. Tigh would’ve just knocked it back. 😉

Chief should have given Apollo one of those little exploding drones from last week’s episode and said “Fly this … CAG” 😉 #BSG15Years
