BSG EPISODE REVIEW – 4×16: Deadlock (February 20, 2009)

In many ways I agree with all of you. I am still totally convinced that Tyrol would leave but I do have my own reasons why he would.

1. Have you seen the way he has been treated since he was revealed to be a Cylon. They will never be accepted, he has to fight tooth and nail to get anything done and it is always under this cloud of suspicion that is not warranted as Tyrol is one of the most loyal, devoted and caring ‘people’ Adama has had on that ship and finding out he was a Cylon did nothing to change that attitude.
2. He does not see a future with the humans on Galactica. Again, they will never be accepted. The Cylons now feel as though they are able to procreate on their own and they see their own future as one alone, away from the humans and away from Cavil.
3 There is nothing tying him to the Galactica. That died with Nicki being Hotdogs father. He has saved the ship, once again, and being made Chief by Adama was a thing of convenience for Adama and not a true acceptance or recognition of who Tyrol is and what he means to the ship, he was just the guy best suited to fix Galactica. It would have meant more to Tyrol if Adama had apologized and asked him to help him fix Galactica, doing the whole Chief ceremony didn’t win Tyrol over.

I don’t agree with the idea of payback. Tyrol does not feel as though he needs to get anyone back. He just wants to live and let live. His mind set will become clearer over the course of the show but this is genuinely where he is.
Tyrol would not see it as bailing. The ship is fine, Adama is fine, he does not see his leaving as bailing on the Galactica or leaving it in the lurch. He is Chief in title only, he is not a human, is not truly a part of the military anymore. Tigh will stay because his loyalty is to Bill Adama, in that aspect Ellen is correct. Tigh is still not fully accepting of the fact that he is a Cylon.
Tyrols judgement is clouded and we can see that by the fact that he ignores the pleas of Anders to stay with the ship.
All will be revealed, have patience my young apprentices….

Jane Espenson is one of the finest writers I have ever met. She was not just a writer of singular episodes but she is a true force in the breaking of stories, the shaping of each script, the development of characters and is always makes herself available for questions and discussions. Let’s not forget that it was Jane who wrote the incredible episode where Adama busts the Chief down to private, one of my favorite scenes of the entire show.

Last nights episode was more of the ‘information’ ep like the last one. The remaining few eps will really inform this episode.

Have patience….

TRANSCRIPT: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA – 4×16: Deadlock (February 20, 2009)

PREVIOUSLY, ON BATTLESTAR GALACTICA…

Tyrol: I started thinking about damage that you can’t see. Hairline fractures in all the beams. It’s throughout the entire ship.

NOTE: In the previous episode the lines were:

Tyrol: This isn’t about those cracks, Admiral. I started thinking about damage that you can’t see. You know, stuff that’s deeper in, that you’d only see on an x-ray. Dealino, fire it up.
Dealino: Okay, Chief. It’s online.
Tyrol: We prepped the beam with this liquid that fluoresces. It’s not an x-ray, but you get the idea. It’s throughout the entire ship. Hairline fractures in all the beams. It’s in her bones, Admiral. Her bones are rotten.

(1) INT. GALACTICA

Adama: Is this gonna work?
Tyrol: I have no idea, sir.
Adama: This is the stuff?
Tyrol: Yeah.
Adama: Can I touch it?
Tyrol: Yeah. It’s gooey. But it hardens, becomes like cartilage. It’s flexible and strong. It’s what the Baseship’s made of.
Adama: Is this alive?

Adama: This better work.

(3) INT. GALACTICA – HANGAR DECK

Roslin: Oh, my Gods. That’s Ellen Tigh.
Ellen: Bill.
Hotdog: How many dead chicks are out there?
Ellen: I can’t tell you how happy I am to see you. Aren’t you gonna help a lady down off this thing?
Tyrol: Nice to see you again. This is Boomer.
Adama: Marines.
Marines: Sir.
Adama: Take this Number Eight to the brig.

(4) INT. GALACTICA – CONFERENCE ROOM
***** TYROL NOT IN THIS SCENE *****

[Ellen asks to see the final four cylons]

Ellen: May I see them? The others? Galen, Tory and Sam? Imagine, Bill, Laura, imagine instead of 50,000 survivors, there are only five. Five people. Imagine how close you’d be. And then to have all that torn away.
Tigh: It’s all right, Ellen. It’s over now.
Ellen: How much do you remember?
Tigh: Not much from before. Flashes.
Apollo: Samuel Anders was badly injured. He’s not responding.
Ellen: Oh, my God.
Tigh: He’s not dead, Ellen. There’s hope.
Ellen: I want to see him. I want to see him and the others.
Adama: We’ll see what we can do.

(6) INT. GALACTICA – SICK BAY

Cottle: A lot of visitors. Just don’t anybody unplug anything.
Ellen: Oh, my-
SIX: I never thought I would see this.
Ellen: Yes, this is how it was. Tory. Galen. All those years. Oh! The poor boy. Such bad timing.
SIX: We’ve been thinking. We belong together. Join us on the Baseship. We’ll jump away. Start a new life.
EIGHT: Please consider the offer. It would mean so much to us.
Tigh: Abandon the Fleet. This is your offer?
SIX: The priority of the Fleet is the survival… The survival of humans.
EIGHT: We’re not safe in this Fleet. Even today, a Cylon was assaulted.
Tory: I agree. This is about the survival of the original Thirteenth Tribe in its purest form.
Tigh: (to Tory) Did you put this idea in their heads?
Ellen: It won’t work, of course. The child, Hera, is the hope for a new blended future.
Tory: That used to be true. But now there is another way. Caprica Six’s unborn baby is pure Cylon. We can rebuild a pure Cylon civilization.
SIX: Even if we don’t find a planet to colonize, we can live indefinitely
on the Baseship.
Tigh: Look at him. He’d die over there.
EIGHT: We can take care of him better than here.
SIX: The Cylon family can survive. We can start over.
Ellen: Caprica Six is pregnant? You got her pregnant?
Tigh: I did. Yeah. I didn’t know. I was surprised.
SIX: It was a great surprise to all of us. The mating of an original Cylon.
Ellen: You are our children.
Tyrol: Can we talk about the offer, maybe deal with the baby later?
Ellen: I can’t believe you got her pregnant.
Tyrol: Are we going or…
Tigh: Of course not. Anders specifically said, “Do not abandon the Fleet.”
Ellen: So you love her then.
Tigh: Last thing he ever said.
Tory: What he said? He’s not saying anything now. I’m going with the Baseship.
Ellen: Even after you knew…
Tigh: For frak’s sake.
Ellen: You made us all filthy in this. You just can’t stop poisoning me. Poison, more and more of it until I’m swimming in it!
EIGHT: Please, stop this.
Tigh: I’m staying on Galactica. You hear me? You can go if you’re so mad.
SIX: Wait. We won’t leave with just one or two of the five. It has to be all of you or none of you.
EIGHT: So you need to vote and the outcome will bind all of you. Majority rule. It’s what Cylons do. It’s a legacy from you.
Tyrol: Fine. So it’s a vote? All right. I vote we go.
Tory: Great. That’s me and you. And we don’t really know what Anders would vote.
Tyrol: Yeah, we do. He said he’d stay.
Ellen: All those years we tried to have children and we never could.
Tight: Ellen.
Ellen: You must’ve been laughing your shiny, shiny head off.
Tight: No.
Ellen: It was impossible. You didn’t love me.
Tight: Ellen.
Tory: So what are you saying? Do you vote to stay or to go?
Ellen: I haven’t decided yet.
Tight: Ellen. Ellen! Ellen.
Tory: Two to go, two to stay, and the swing vote is walking out the door.

(7) INT. GALACTICA – JOE’S BAR

Starbuck: Hey, when’d you get a piano?
Tyrol: Gin.
Starbuck: You see Ellen and Tigh on the wing of that bird? It’s like watching my parents make out. You go see Boomer in the brig yet?
Tyrol: No.
Starbuck: You should go when she’s asleep. I watched Sam until I just couldn’t handle the fun anymore.

(9) INT. GALACTICA – ADAMA’S QUARTERS
***** TYROL NOT IN THIS SCENE *****

Adama: So the five of you together at last. Any mythic revelations?
Tigh: Nope. Nothing to report, sir.
Adama: Hmm. You were born, right, Saul?
Tigh: What?
Adama: You were born.
Tigh: On Earth. Yeah. I don’t remember. But… I wouldn’t anyway. Nature of the process, right? (laughs).
Adama: Not very machine-like of you.
Tigh: Great Grandpa was a power sander.
[Both men laugh]
Adama: They’re putting the stuff into her.
Tigh: Yes. The Cylon goop, you said.
Adama: Yeah. If it works, she’ll still be the Galactica on the outside, but… She won’t know what she is anymore. It’ll save her. That along with Cylons flying CAP. We need their help. We need your help. Laura and Lee know it. They don’t think I see it. But I do. I see it.

(11) INT. GALACTICA – TOOL ROOM

Tigh: Thanks for seeing me alone. I just… I have to talk to you.
Ellen: Of course.
Tigh: Ellen… Hate me, I’ll take it. But this is bigger than that. Galactica needs the Baseship.
Ellen: Why did you even make love to me, Saul, when your real love was at home?
Tigh: Did you even hear what I said?
Ellen: Bill needs the Baseship. I heard you. Did you hear me? Her brush is where mine used to be. My dresses are gone. She shares our bed. Do you remember, I got us that mattress?
Tigh: You went to my quarters?
Tyrol: Not interrupting?
Ellen: Not at all. I was expecting you.
Tigh: You called him?
Ellen: (to Tory) Good. Come on in. (to Caprica Six) You too, Caprica.
Tigh: What is this?
Ellen: We’re joining the Baseship. All of us. We can jump away from the
Fleet whenever you’re ready.
EIGHT: Thank you.
SIX: It’s the right decision.
Tigh: No. No, it’s not. No.
Ellen: The vote is you and Anders versus me, Tory and Galen. Caprica, obviously, that means you have to come, too. Wouldn’t you like to raise your child where it’s safe?
Caprica Six: I want him to be safe, yes.
Tigh: She doesn’t understand what this means.
Ellen: I used to think Hera was the only hope for us. But clearly that’s just not true anymore.
Tigh: No. Her baby, he’s pure Cylon. If we go off and make some pure Cylon culture… That’s what happened on Earth and it led to disaster. Pure human doesn’t work. Pure Cylon doesn’t work. It’s too weak.
Ellen: You just don’t want to leave the one you really love.
Caprica Six: What? Talk to me. What is this?
Tigh: It’s petty and vile.
Tory: Enough. She’s voted. When’s the jump? We can be ready in an hour.
Tigh: Well, I’m not going.
Tyrol: We agreed on majority rule.
Tigh: (scoffs) Well, frak, apparently, we invented majority rule. But I don’t remember it, so frak that.
Caprica Six: Saul, don’t let her…
Tigh: All right, go. Go. All of you. Caprica. Go. Go be pure and safe and whatever the frak. I’m not going.
Ellen: (to Caprica Six) Do you see, little girl? There is something in the universe that he loves far more than you or me. And that’s Bill Adama.
Tigh: You don’t even want to go. This is all to hurt me.
Ellen: It’s Bill Adama, and the ship …
Tigh: How can you sink so low?
Ellen: … and the uniform. And everything else takes second place.
Tigh: Why are you doing this?
Ellen: I knew I did. But I always wondered if a baby would. Guess I know now.
Caprica Six: (groans in pain)
Tyrol: Come here.
Caprica Six: Something’s wrong. Something’s really wrong.
Tyrol: Get Cottle. Get Cottle. Get Cottle. Got to get her to sick bay
EIGHT: You’ll be okay.
