#BSG15Years – 2×09: Flight Of The Phoenix

15 years ago today, the BATTLESTAR GALACTICA episode 2×09: Flight Of The Phoenix aired on September 16, 2005 on the Sci Fi Channel in the USA.
This episode was written by Bradley Thompson & David Weddle and directed by Michael Nankin. #BSG15Years.

Aaron Douglas (@theaarondouglas) September 16, 2020
This is my favourite ep. It was written by 2 of the best writers I know, Bradley & David, who always write amazing stuff for me. This is the 1st time I got to work with the incredible director Michael Nankin. He made this ep special. #BSG15Years

The visual of the Chief with Boomer and the Viper is really beautiful and interesting to me. I think that interplay really gives insight into him, how he sees the things he cares about and how he can be rough and tough but gentle when it’s needed. #BSG15Years

Aaron Douglas (@theaarondouglas) September 16, 2020
This was so much fun to film b/c @TahmohPenikett is one of the toughest & best fighters I know & this is the only time I’d have a chance at beating him. We got to throw each other around for a day and it’s always fun when you can really get after it with another actor #BSG15Years

Aaron Douglas (@theaarondouglas) September 16, 2020
But in a real fight between me and @TahmohPenikett, I would come in 3rd 🤣

Tahmoh Penikett (@TahmohPenikett) September 16, 2020
Great scene and it was blast mixing it up with you one on one, my friend!

I got to go to the construction building and watch them build the Blackbird in stages for filming. We shot this whole episode in sequence, rarely done, and every day the construction people would wheel in the next build of the ship. It was very cool. #BSG15Years

Working with Michael Hogan is always a treat but this scene really stands out for me. The almost completely broken Chief just looking for anything to give him life and the humanity of Tigh coming through as he recognizes that. Hogan is an absolute gem. #BSG15Years

Aaron Douglas (@theaarondouglas) September 16, 2020
I know Starbuck says “don’t blow up on me, you bastard” but when I watch this scene I say “please don’t blow up on HER, they’ll blame the Chief!” HA. Katee really sells bucking bronco at a rodeo and it’s really fun to watch. #BSG15Years

Roslin’s reaction after Chief removes the nose drape ALWAYS makes me teary 😢

Aaron Douglas (@theaarondouglas) September 16, 2020
MARY! If this scene doesn’t make you cry you may be a robot. @bearmccreary’s music just rips at your soul and the awkwardness between the Chief and Roslin is so very sweet. When @MaryMcDonnell10 lifted that bottle to smash it Chief almost flew out of his boots. #BSG15Years

INTERVIEW (AUDIO): Below the Belt Show (October 18-20, 2019) Baltimore Comic-Con 2019

Interview: Actor Aaron Douglas from Battlestar Galactica
By: Al Sotto (Host/Producer) & Chachi McFly (Co-Host/Co-Producer)
Convention: Baltimore Comic-Con 2019
Source: Below the Belt Show (HERE) and (HERE)

Here’s an audio interview that Aaron Douglas did with Below the Belt Show at the Baltimore Comic-Con (October 2019). After listening to it I messaged Aaron and asked “why are you saying Mary’s surname weird? Is that how you’re supposed to pronounce it and we’ve all been saying it wrong this whole time?” And he replied “Yes. That’s the proper Scottish way. She told me years ago that only myself and her dear friend, famous actor who passed away, said it correctly”. Well there you go, I HAD NO IDEA!!!! But …. the way the host pronounces Galen, that is WRONG. lol.

Description: Happy New Year and welcome to the new decade! Below The Belt Show (www.belowthebeltshow.com) is on winter hiatus but never fear, exclusive interviews are still here! BTB’s own Al Sotto interviews actor Aaron Douglas on-location at The Baltimore Comic-Con (www.baltimorecomiccon.com)! In an exclusive interview Aaron talks about the possibilty of another iteration of BSG, reuniting with Katee Sackhoff on Another Life and more! (from January 8, 2020 Show)

If I have been saying it wrong all these years then other people must have been as well so I posted about it on twitter. Below are comments from Aaron Douglas, Mary McDonnell and Rekha Sharma.

BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: Aaron’s BSG Stories from the Set

Aaron Douglas (@theaarondouglas) January 19, 2018
Why are all the worst songs also the longest songs?

Aaron Douglas (@theaarondouglas) January 19, 2018
When we were filming Battlestar I would sneak up behind Jen Halley (Seelix) & sing the opening to either ‘you had a bad day’ or ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’. She’d scream I HATE YOU! & run away. In her head all day. Good times….

Aaron Douglas (@theaarondouglas) January 21, 2018
Very early in BSG filming I found a screw on the floor. I picked it up & walked over to @nickiclyne who was talking to Michael Rymer, the director. I quietly put it in her hand. We passed that screw back & forth for 3 seasons. I miss screwing with Cally

Aaron Douglas (@theaarondouglas) January 21, 2018
We filmed the Algae Planet eps in Kamloops BC. My best friend since high school, Jason, lives there & I got production to hire him as an extra. I took him out w/ cast/crew for a late late night. He had a 5 am call the next day. Ha! He’s still mad at me for it. @Lumley71

Aaron Douglas (@theaarondouglas) January 21, 2018
They called him ‘Hollywood’ for months at work. & he was a prison guard at the time. 🤣🤣🤣

Aaron Douglas (@theaarondouglas) January 21, 2018
Lumley drove us from the hotel to the bars downtown. He had the top off his Jeep & we piled about 11 actors & crew into it for the drive. I stood on the bumper, holding the crash bar w/ another unnamed actor.

In Lay Down Your Burdens Part 1. Cally startles a passed out Chief awake on the Hangar Deck. Chief wakes up swinging. After one take I looked at Nicki & she was crying “you…. hit… me”. I had accidentally clipped her in the heat of the moment. Still sorry little girl. ;-)

Aaron Douglas (@theaarondouglas) January 25, 2018
A story about Mary. Late in the show we had a scene where Chief was pleading w/ President Roslin to spare Boomer’s life while in Adama’s quarters. Roslin kept saying no. Mary is such an amazing actor that I, Aaron, started subconsciously feeling that Mary was upset with me. 1/2

Aaron Douglas (@theaarondouglas) January 25, 2018
After one really heavy take I paused. Amid the bustle of the crew Mary could see it & caught my eye. She softly said “Aaron honey…. I love you.” & smiled. I snapped out of it, my heart melted & I cried a little. She got it, & me. But Roslin was still a bitch to Chief. 😉 2/2

Aaron Douglas (@theaarondouglas) February 14, 2018
Earlier on in filming we found ourselves on a planet w/ many characters. Roslin & Billy being two. I’ve known @ThePaulCampbell for many years & he’s one of the funniest men I know. Well Mary made the mistake of telling Paul & I that she was going to the horse track on the wknd.

Aaron Douglas (@theaarondouglas) February 14, 2018
Mary asked us about betting, secrets to, what to look for in a horse, etc. Paul & I landed on ‘pick by name’ right away. It was then 2 hours of naming shitty/great horses that stopped production because Mary was laughing too hard to breathe. Wins By a Nose-Bet it hard.

Aaron Douglas (@theaarondouglas) February 14, 2018
Glue Factory-Stay away from it Mary. Always Comes In Second-Nope. Jockey Tosser-Forget it. Built For Comfort-Never. Never Loses-Sure Mare, take a look. Botton Of The Podium-Bet to show Mary. We had dozens more hey Pauly? With the cool nasal’y track guy voice too.

Paul Campbell (ThePaulCampbell) February 14, 2018
Still one of my all-time favorite days on set. It was the pairings that killed me. “Guaranteed to Win” against “Hopelessly Crippled” – and “Beaten By A Nose” running against “A Nose.” Still laughing, buddy.

INTERVIEW: Battlestar Galactica Cast Interviews

Battlestar Galactica Cast Interviews

Note: This is a snippet of an interview with some of the cast of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA. I have only included the parts of the interview with AARON DOUGLAS below. To read the full interview, click HERE.

Now that this series is coming to an end, some of the actors tend to look at things a little differently when they come in to work.

“There was life before BSG and there will be life after BSG, so things will go back to normal,” says Hogan.

“I’d like to be the next guest host on the VIEW (after BSG),” laughs actor Aaron Douglas, who plays another human-to-Cylon newbie, Gaelin Tyrol.

Douglas goes on to talk about his off-screen involvement with the fans of the show. “I love going to conventions. This year alone I’ve gone to Italy, Australia, New Zealand, London, Miami, New York, LA., San Francisco..I love going to conventions. I absolutely love the fans. I genuinely…it’s a cliche…but I genuinely mean it when I say that the sci-fi fans are the best fans in the world. They are so much fun.

“The fans really embrace us and we in turn really embrace the fans. Every convention is a wonderful experience. The cool thing is meeting the other actors from the other shows…and there are doctors and lawyers, and the guy from Starbucks…the complete spectrum of society. These people come from all over the world and they are as passionate about it as we are, and I think it’s wonderful. I am very fortunate that I get to go and talk about it and give spoilers…” Douglas muses.

Because the series’ story will soon come to its close in 2008, the actors reminisce about some of their favorite moments, scenes and episodes experienced thus far.

Douglas pipes up, “‘Dirty Hands’, Season Three—I spent the whole day working with Mary (Mary McDonnell). I had never gotten the chance to work with Mary without a whole bunch of other people around and the last scene of that episode is her and I seated in a dark room across from each other just talking about the union stuff.

“We shot that thing for about four or five hours and I have never worked with someone more engaged, engaging, looking through your eyes, deep into your soul, more prepared, more caring, loving…I just felt like I was in a mother’s embrace all day long…it was the most spectacular moment in my acting career. She is an absolute angel on earth and I will take that memory from the show for the rest of my life,” he sighs.
