BSG EPISODE REVIEW – 4×03: The Ties That Bind (April 18, 2008)

SMALLVILLE: Official Magazine

The latest issue of the Official Smallville Magazine (Issue 26) has an interview with Aaron in it.

Justin Hartley Interview: When OLIVER QUEEN first appeared in Smallville, he and his alter ego – the Green Arrow – soon shot their way into fans’ hearts. Smallville Magazine talks to the Emerald Archer himself, Justin Hartley, who tells us about being hit by Cupid’s arrow with BLACK CANARY, Oliver’s rivalry with LEX LUTHOR, and why he said no to fighting in a towel! Plus, we chat to guest star Aaron Douglas – after passing through in season one’s “Obscura”, the Battlestar Galactica actor revisits Smallville as Deputy Michael Birtigo in “Traveler”.

NOTE: They screwed up that description. Aaron played Pierce in Traveler. Deputy Michael Birdego (correct spelling of surname) was his character in 1×20: Obscura.

I’ve ordered a copy of the magazine off ebay but it will take awhile to get to Australia from the USA. Once it arrives, I’ll scan the article and post it on here. But if anyone has a copy of the magazine (or can pick up a copy) and can scan it, that would be much appreciated.

Chief Tyrol Dog Tags

The wait is finally over. The set of 7 BSG character dog tags that I pre-ordered (and paid for) in Dec 2006, arrived today.

The photo on the left was taken by Aaron of the Chief’s actual dog tags.
The photo on the right is of the QMX dog tags.

They’re not perfect. The font is wrong (look at the number 9). And you can’t tell from the photo on the right (because of the camera flash) but the dog tags are VERY dark in colour. And the chain is wayyyyyyyy too long but that can easily be fixed. Do you think Aaron will suggest I be committed if I ask him to count the beads on his dog tags so I can make mine the same length? :)

But they are the best replica dog tags that I’ve seen so far. Can’t complain when they cost less than USD$20. They are much better than those awful shiny dog tags that QMX are selling for USD$49.95 (see image below) and all the other fan made Chief Tyrol dog tags that I’ve purchased off ebay in the past.

Below is a scan of the Chief Tyrol ‘character biography card’ that came with the dog tags.

Aaron will never say FRAK on BSG (???)

Below is excerpt from the wired.com article about S4 of BSG. According to them, Aaron has said he will never say FRAK on BSG …

Frak is back, big time
Characters spew BSG’s signature F word four times in the season opener’s first three minutes. But don’t expect the Chief to use the expletive any time soon. Aaron Douglas, the actor who plays Chief Petty Officer Galen Tyrol, told Wired.com that he vows never to utter frak on camera. Too bad he’s used it at home: While taking pots out of a kitchen cabinet, Douglas says, some kitchenware fell directly on his foot. Gut reaction? “Frak!”

Is that true? I know the Chief has said frakking, mother-frakker, frak wit. But has the Chief never said frak? Really? Hmmmm, I think this needs a little investigating. Off to rewatch scenes of the Chief.

EDIT: Here’s all the mentions of frak-isms by the Chief. I stopped checking once I found an actual frak.

1×07: Six Degrees of Separation – “Frak it” [Note: He was mumbling it. So I’ll let him get away with that one]
2×01: Scattered – “That’s it. That’s it, you stupid, frakked-up crap!”
2×02: Valley of Darkness – “Mother-frakker”
2×08: Final Cut – “You know what? Frak the camera. You’ve been riding by crews ass for no frakking reason”
2×09: Flight of the Phoenix – “Did she fill you in on the rest of the plan? She and I were going to muster out at the end of our service. You know, then we would get married. Maybe we would have children. I guess I’m just a big frakkin’ idiot, though, huh? Probably that goddamn toaster’s plan all along”
2×09: Flight of the Phoenix – “(in his head) Frak it. Why not?”

And from tonight’s episode …
4×01: He That Believeth In Me – “Get the frak in there, go kill something”
4×01: He That Believeth In Me – “Anders! Get the frak in your Viper!”

EDIT (2): In Aaron’s defence (because I asked him about this) He said that he gave them that quote back in season one. And as you can see, he never said it in season one. Aaron FTW :)
