INTERVIEW (AUDIO): Comic Book Yeti

Mark Verheiden and Aaron Douglas talk Borealis
By: Byron O’Neal
Date: January 13, 2024
Source: Comic Book Yeti

Aaron and Mark Verheiden spoke to Byron O’Neal from The Comic Book Yeti podcast to discuss their new comic BOREALIS. There are 3 comic books in the series. Issue #1 is already out. Issue #2 comes out next week (Jan 17) and Issue #3 is out on Feb 21, 2024. Then all 3 comics will be put together in a hardcover book coming out in July 2024.

This is a really great interview. Comic books aren’t really my thing but I found this to be a REALLY interesting interview (Byron is great at his job) and I learned a lot of things about the comic and their process. Stay until the end where Aaron cryptically discusses what he has coming up work wise. I can’t wait until we can tell you all about it.

Description: What do you get when two old Battlestar Galactia alumni get together to make a comic book. Turns out, not at all what you might expect. I got a chance to catch up with Mark Verheiden and Aaron Douglas to hear all about their new Dark Horse Comics project, Borealis. I was initially drawn to it from the native and supernatural elements alone but this is a big story with lots of overlapping narratives. Pulling in the talented team of Cliff Richards to handle the art duties and colored deftly by Guy Major (both of which have names one might find in credits from Airwolf or something,) this is a book that comes off as surprisingly urban given its very remote setting in rural Alaska. I honestly have no idea how they are going to wrap the initial arc up in three issues but I’m sticking around to find out. Issue 2 is out in stores next week.

I am listening to this new interview with Aaron (by Craig from Kneel Before Blog) and I’m 🤣😂 at time stamp 22:56. That was ME. I thought he was so bad in THE RETURNED. I couldn’t work out what was going on. I seriously thought he had forgotten how to act. But then he explained it to me and I was like “ohhhh, now it makes sense”. Aaron can always rely on me to never blow smoke up his ass, if I think he sucks, I’ll tell him. lol.
Anyway, that was a really great interview covering a lot of different topics, give it a listen when you get a chance.

MoPOP: Q&A With Science Fiction + Fantasy Short Film Festival Juror Aaron Douglas

Q&A With Science Fiction + Fantasy Short Film Festival Jurors Aaron Douglas & Kate Dollarhyde
Date: August 26, 2020
Source: MoPOP

Note: This is an interview with SFFSFF Jurors Aaron Douglas & Kate Dollarhyde. I have only included the interview answers from AARON DOUGLAS below. To read the full interview, click HERE.

The Museum of Pop Culture in partnership with SIFF presents the 15th annual Science Fiction + Fantasy Short Film Festival (SFFSFF) live online this Saturday, August 29, with a virtual encore screening set for Sunday, August 30. This celebration of artistic excellence brings together cinema enthusiasts, filmmakers, and artists for a showcase of illuminating and unconventional films. The festival features industry professionals and genre experts encouraging and supporting new, creative additions to science fiction, fantasy, and horror cinematic arts.

Admitted films are judged by a nationally recognized jury comprised of luminaries in the fields of science fiction, fantasy, and horror, two of which we hear from today: Aaron Douglas (@theaarondouglas) and Kate Dollarhyde (@katedollarhyde).

Aaron Douglas is best known for his portrayal of Chief Galen Tyrol on Syfy’s Battlestar Galactica. With over 100 other Film-TV & Video Game credits on his impressive resume—including X-Men 2, iRobot, Stargate SG-1, The Bridge, Hellcats, Hemlock Grove, The Killing, The Returned, Falling Skies, The Strain, iZombie, The X-Files, Supernatural, The Flash, Once Upon A Time, Dirk Gently Holistic Detective Agency, Imposters, Jordi Chin in Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs, and more. Aaron is now creating and writing comic books for AfterShock Comics. His writing can be found in the first two volumes of Shock and he’s currently working on his first original graphic novel, which is slated to be released in 2020.

Kate Dollarhyde is a WGA-nominated writer of speculative fictions and the former editor-in-chief of SFF magazine Strange Horizons. As a narrative designer at Obsidian Entertainment, she’s worked on The Outer Worlds and the Pillars of Eternity series. Her short stories have been published in Fireside Fiction, Lackington’s, Beneath Ceaseless Skies, and other magazines.

Ahead of this weekend’s virtual festival, which you can find tickets for right here, we caught up with Douglas and Dollarhyde to ask them a few questions about sci-fi, fantasy, filmmaking, and more.

What did you look for when watching the shorts submitted for our 15th annual Science Fiction + Fantasy Short Film Festival?

A beginning, middle and an end. Or, if you can’t do that, then make it clear where you’ve jumped us into the story and leave it so we want more. Keep it simple and clear, it’s a short.

What is it about sci-fi and fantasy that draws you to the genre? What do you think are the genre’s weak spots?

The endless possibilities is the thing that draws me to and pushes me away. If you’re going to make a purely fantastical film make it so I can completely escape. Don’t blend in the absolutely impossible with our world, all I see is our world and I’m reminded that this isn’t real. Keep that subtle and nuanced and I can buy in. Or make Star Wars or Lord of the Rings, then I can get on board because it is purely implausible.

What are some types of sci-fi and fantasy that don’t get enough attention from filmmakers?

I would like to see more films that blend our real world with sci-fi and fantasy with the latter being used with a nuance that allows the audience to have pause and think, that could actually be real. Make films about real legends, both past and current, that are based in loose fact, perhaps even some having people genuinely believing in the phenomenon. e.g. Loch Ness Monster, Sasquatch, ancient legends, UFOs. Like QAnon, but for people who are fun and not lunatics.

Of the various components that make up a great film, what do you think are the most important to the overall success of the storytelling?

Dialogue. When I watch a film and think, “No one talks like that” I am totally out of it. Keep the story moving, don’t get bogged down in director or writer wank. Don’t spend 15 minutes on battles between giant unbreakable robots in scenes where they destroy a city throwing each other around in blinding cuts and action that can cause a seizure. It’s a wank, they’re indestructible, there’s no jeopardy because of that and because they are robots and the audience cannot identify with them no matter how much you anthropomorphize them. In other words, don’t focus on things that I absolutely don’t care about.

What are the common pitfalls that filmmakers fall into that lead to their films not being successful?

This depends on what you deem successful. Box office? Critical acclaim? A quality film? I’ve seen absolute dogs of films that have made hundreds of millions of dollars. That’s success in one sense. I’ve seen films that I have adored, yet not many others had the same view of them. I don’t listen to the critics, so I’d never base my opinion of success on what they say. It’s one person’s opinion and why is theirs more valid than anyone else’s? Make what you want to make and if you like it in the end then that’s all that matters. Unless of course you are making it for pure commercial success, then just follow the formula and make the wank that the studio wants you to make. But remember, some of the people from the studio who put their hands into the mix are not filmmakers for a reason and it is this reason, if they’re allowed to weigh in too much, then your film will go sideways.

How do you think sci-fi and fantasy will respond to the calls for social change as part of Black Lives Matter? Are there some shifts in tone/subjects on the horizon?

I hope the world of TV and film sci-fi and fantasy follows what has become the mantra for the conventions of the same; we are open to and here for everyone, regardless of culture, race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identification, etc etc. If the shifts result in everyone feeling like they have a comfortable and supported place in the room then I am all for whatever tone or subjects need to change.

Who has lifted you up and supported you and your work? How did you find them?

Specifically there are too many to name. From directors and writers, other actors, people in the industry, and those people have been found through the work. My biggest source of support is my family, my friends, and the fans. The constant fan notes of gratitude and appreciation for my work and that they seek out my work in new and even old shows is an amazing thing. When I began, my thought was I want to emotionally move someone the way I am moved when I watch a great performance. To have someone articulate that I’ve done that to them is an amazing thing.

What is the best piece of advice you have received from a mentor/colleague?

From my dad. Too many to list them all: Everything happens for a reason. Trust the process. Surround yourself with people who support you. Move those who don’t out of your life. Don’t let the highs be too high nor the lows be too low. Take your nose off the screen so you can see the full picture. Enjoy the journey of life and don’t rush to get to the destination. The universe is unfolding exactly as it is supposed to.

INTERVIEW: Baltimore Comic-Con Interview – Aaron Douglas

Baltimore Comic-Con Interview – Aaron Douglas
Date: October 18 – 20, 2019
Source: Scoop

Actor Aaron Douglas was among the media guests at Baltimore Comic-Con, meeting fans of his performance on shows like Battlestar Galactica. Douglas talked to Scoop about the modern sci-fi classic, his visit to Baltimore, and a few other projects.

Are you having a good time this weekend?
I am living the dream. I’m in Baltimore, I’ve got a bit of a cold, my voice is starting to go away, but I’m alright.

So, you’re having a good time?
Yes, I’m having a great time. This city is not quite what I expected, but in a very positive way.

Have you done some sightseeing in Baltimore?
I did the historic ships of Baltimore tour on Thursday and took a tour with a tour guide, the lovely Stephanie, and it was supposed to be an hour and two and a half hours later she’s still telling us about the constellation that we were standing on. It was just a really cool experience. Anybody who comes to Baltimore, you have to do the historic ships tour, that is just a fantastic thing.

What do you like about coming to conventions?
You’re a demigod for a weekend, you know? You don’t have to buy your own beer, people are just lovely. I don’t get this at home – I have to take out the garbage and cook. Here, people do all these things for me. Seriously, though, the fans are so incredible. Sci-fi fans are the best. They love what you do, they’ll follow you, they’ll support you as long as you are honest and true with them, they will support your career and keep you going. Battlestar [Galactica] has been over for ten years, but it still touches a lot of people and I like hearing stories like that.

What did you like about being on Battlestar?
It bought me a house, so there’s that. It was just such a great show, the cast was so great. It sounds cliché, but we were a real family. We still stay in touch and talk to each other. When I go to a different show and there’s a camera guy or a lighting guy or a grip or whatever that worked on Battlestar, it’s old home week. It’s hugs and high fives and smiles and joking around. I don’t have that with any other show.

What did you find challenging about being on that show?
The content is so dark. Someone is always dying, has died, or is dying in your arms, or about to die. That was the challenging part – the emotional toll it takes to go through all that kind of stuff. But, we made something that was really cool, so all the work is worth the reward.

Was the dramatic stuff more challenging than the physicality?
Well, the physicality at one point was really tough for me because I was playing in a hockey tournament when I wasn’t supposed to be. I’m a goalie and I tore my groin, I just ripped muscles all over the place. So for weeks and weeks and weeks I was on crutches. So there’s a good run of episodes where the chief never moves. He just stands there and holds on to a desk or holds on to a person – that’s me. They yell “action” and someone takes my crutches away and I bark at somebody and they yell “cut” and someone gives me my crutches back.

Okay, now I’m going to have to re-watch some episodes and try to find those.
See if you can find it.

Was there any other character on the show that you would like to play?
Oh wow. Well, James Callis [who played Dr. Gaius Baltar] got to smooch Tricia Helfer [Number Six] all the time, so that would’ve been pretty good. No, I’m pretty happy with Chief. I like him, I like that he becomes one of the final five. I think the Chief and Colonel Tigh humanize the Cylons more than any other character would. I don’t want to be Apollo, because Jamie [Bamber] had to go to the gym all the time and be fit and handsome. I just don’t want to be that guy.

I like Chief, I feel like he was a likeable, relatable, heroic dude.
Blue collar guy, stands up for his people. End of the day you can count on him. I like him.

Switching show genres, you’ve done a couple of the Hallmark mystery movies lately. What’s that like?
Those are fun because you know what you’re making. You’re not making Schindler’s List, you’re not going for an Academy Award. You’re making something fun and sweet. I had a great time doing When Calls the Heart, I had a great time doing Garage Sale Mysteries, and Gourmet Detective, all that kind of stuff. They’re great, they’re fun.

What else are you working on now?
I joined the cast of a show that’s currently airing in its season four, maybe, that I’m not allowed to announce yet. It just started airing and I join the cast later in the season.

Oh, are you a good guy or a bad guy?
I am a good guy. In the end I think he’s a good guy.

Interesting, now I’m really curious. I want to pump you for information but I shouldn’t.
Well, you’re not going to get anything. That’s the thing.

Okay, what about The Flash, did you enjoy that?
Oh yeah, I had a ball doing The Flash. Everybody on that cast is genuinely sweet people, they’re just lovely people. Grant [Gustin] is a great guy, which is so nice to see because somebody young, got their own show, it could go to their head and they could become a maniac and he is the exact opposite. Some of The Flash crew are ex-Battlestar crew, so they welcomed me in and I had a ball.

Are you doing any more cons this year?
I have nothing planned, this is the only one I have this year, that I know of. Nobody’s asked me to go anywhere else, so I need to get a new sci-fi show so I can do the convention circuit again.

Another round for Battlestar?
Yeah, something like that. Let’s throw me on the new Battlestar, let’s get that petition going.

That would be awesome.
I would love that.

Here’s an audio interview that Aaron Douglas did with Below the Belt Show at the Baltimore Comic-Con (October 2019). After listening to it I messaged Aaron and asked “why are you saying Mary’s surname weird? Is that how you’re supposed to pronounce it and we’ve all been saying it wrong this whole time?” And he replied “Yes. That’s the proper Scottish way. She told me years ago that only myself and her dear friend, famous actor who passed away, said it correctly”. Well there you go, I HAD NO IDEA!!!! But …. the way the host pronounces Galen, that is WRONG. lol.

We caught up with Battlestar Galactica’s Aaron Douglas (Galen) and Grace Park (Boomer/Athena) at SDCC to ask them about their favorite powerful moments, funny stories, and cast memories. Aaron reveals which cast member is the greatest actor he’s ever worked with and “slapping the sound guy in the face with my dink.” And, yes, as Aaron assured us, that happened.

Park discusses what went on behind the scenes during the rape scene on board the Pegasus and why she feels it was important to shoot the whole scene even if it was edited later.

Are there more BSG cast memories? Both Douglas and Park assure us there are more stories to tell.
