Source: DeadlineComic-Con got a sneak peek today of the upcoming Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency. The show toplined by Elijah Wood and Samuel Barnett based on Douglas Adams’ 1987 book debuts October 22 on BBC America. Wood and Barnett were in attendance at the convention center today along with fellow cast members Hannah Marks, Jade Eshete as well as lead writer and EP Max Landis and showrunner Robert Cooper.
Drawing from the Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy author’s work, the eight-episode series follows the time-and-space-shifting adventures of eccentric “holistic” detective Dirk Gently (Barnett) and his reluctant assistant Todd (Wood). “Dirk thinks he’s a detective. He has this ability to see things other people can’t see,” Barnett offered about his character. “He’s kind of really lonely.”
“It’s an impressionistic adaptation,” said Cooper of the comedic thriller, “and I think Max captured the spirit of Douglas Adams.” A passionate Landis added, “You can’t do Douglas Adams by doing Douglas Adams.” Saying that he “loved writing boys being friends,” the American Ultra scribe then said to cheers from the crowd, “I decided I’m going to make my own thing using his thing.”
Dirk Gently also features Mpho Koaho, Fiona Dourif, Michael Eklund, Miquel Sandoval, Dustin Mulligan, Aaron Douglas, Neil Brown Jr. and West Wing alum Richard Schiff.
The series is a co-production of AMC Studios, Ideate Media and IDW Entertainment, with Circle of Confusion producing.
